Proper Aquarium Care Basics

Keeping a healthy, thriving aquarium is easier when you understand the basics. From choosing the right size aquarium and filtration system to providing proper lighting, feeding your fish, and maintaining good water quality, each part of your aquarium plays an important role in the health and happiness of your fish.

Whether you're setting up your first aquarium or you've been keeping fish for years, these helpful tips can serve as a simple reference for proper aquarium care and maintenance. Taking a little time to establish the right environment from the beginning can help prevent common problems and keep your aquarium looking beautiful.

Use the tips below as a starting point, and if you have questions about your fish, aquarium, or supplies, stop by Aquatic Oasis—we're always happy to help!
Aquarium Size

  • Don’t overcrowd your aquarium. Your fish will need 1 gallon of water for every inch of adult fish.
  • Select fish that are compatible and can peacefully share an aquatic home.

Filtration

  • Choose a filter that is rated for your aquarium size.
  • Replace your filter cartridge every 2-4 weeks or as needed.

Lighting and Heating

  • Only keep the aquarium lights on for 8-10 hours per day.
  • If keeping tropical fish, choose a heater to keep your aquarium at the appropriate temperature and a thermometer to help monitor the temperature.

Food and Water Care

  • Feed your fish one small pinch of natural food 1-2 times per day.
  • Use water conditioner to remove chemicals in your tap water and make it safe for your fish.

Gravel and Décor

  • You will need 1-2 lbs of gravel/sand for every gallon of water.
  • Make sure to rinse any gravel and decor before adding it to your aquarium.

Aquarium Stand

  • Your new aquarium should be placed on a sturdy, level surface.
  • Choose a stand that will hold the weight of your aquarium. Remember, one gallon of water weighs about 8.5 lbs.
  • Avoid placing aquarium and stand in direct sunlight as it can alter water temperature and promote algae growth.

Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Remove and replace 25% of the water in your aquarium with conditioned water at least once per month.
  • NEVER empty all of the water in your aquarium at once. Removing all aquarium water eliminates beneficial bacteria that was developed over time.
